About Me

Hi, I’m David Thompson, a game designer, producer, and educator with over a decade of experience in the gaming industry. From AAA titles to indie games and mods, I’ve had the privilege of working across a wide range of platforms—PC, console, mobile, VR, and blockchain. My journey started in the Command & Conquer modding community, where my love for game design and modding first took root. Over the years, that passion has evolved into a successful career, and I continue to be inspired by the same community that sparked my interest in game development.

MY Journey

Career Highlights & Impact

Throughout my career, I’ve worked on both high-profile projects and indie-driven passions. At mod.io, I led the Unreal Engine and C++ SDK teams, delivering impactful modding tools for games like Homeworld 3, Baldur’s Gate 3, and the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Trilogy. I’m particularly proud of the mod support we brought to these titles, enabling modders to reach new audiences across multiple platforms like PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and Nintendo Switch.

I’m also deeply passionate about modding, particularly my ongoing project Tiberian Sun Rising, where I serve as Game Director. This total conversion mod for Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars has gained significant traction, being voted #1 Best Upcoming Mod of the Year by Mod DB in 2017. It remains a passion project that brings together an incredible international team and dedicated fan community.

In addition to my modding work, I’ve contributed to major commercial titles, including Gameloft’s My Little Pony: Magic Princess (which reached 50 million players worldwide), Wooga’s Pearl’s Peril, and Immutable’s blockchain game Gods Unchained. These projects have allowed me to refine my expertise in game design, production, and player engagement.

Teaching & Mentorship

Alongside my game development career, I’m also deeply passionate about sharing my knowledge and mentoring the next generation of developers. I’ve taught game development, programming, and 3D modeling at Box Hill Institute, where I developed courses and provided guidance for students in the Diploma and Cert IV programs. Helping students grow into industry-ready professionals has been one of the most rewarding aspects of my career.

Beyond teaching, I’ve also contributed to curriculum development and mentored students to help them navigate their careers in the gaming industry. Seeing them succeed and thrive in this dynamic field brings me immense satisfaction, as I believe in the power of education to shape the future of gaming.

My Hobbies

Personal Interests

When I’m not developing games or teaching, I’m a brown belt in Karate, an avid baker, and a passionate reader. I enjoy traveling, personal development, and finding ways to maintain a balanced life. These personal hobbies enrich my creativity and keep me grounded as I continue my journey in the game development world. My most recent trip was to Japan which was incredibly inspiring.
